Session Formats

  • Communities of Practice: A community of practice is a group of people who share a common concern, a set of problems, or an interest in a topic and who come together to fulfill individual and group goals. Communities of practice often focus on sharing best practices and creating new knowledge to advance a domain of professional practice. These communities of practice are informal, organic, and free-flowing. Community of Practice sessions are moderated by an individual who has knowledge of and experience in the domain. However, the moderator is not intended to provide answers, but to enable discussions amongst members.

  • Concurrent Sessions: These sessions are packed with original content and tactical advice. Presentations from experts and peers could be solo presenters or co-presenters, featuring best practices, forward-looking strategies, and resources you need to advance your leadership competencies now and in the future.

  • CRISP Talks, short for Continuous Renewal by Innovating & Seeking Perfection, are brief, engaging presentations designed to share "ideas worth spreading." These talks inspire the audience to think differently, take action, or gain new insights, specifically to guide physician leaders in improving patient care and healthcare systems.

Presented during a general session, CRISP Talks simplify complex topics through storytelling and effective communication, making them accessible and engaging. Each talk is 12 minutes long, delivering impactful messages in a concise format. After the general session, each speaker will lead a 1-hour breakout room discussion to explore their topic more deeply and answer audience questions.

  • Immersive Workshops are interactive sessions that engage participants through simulations, role-playing, and real-world problem-solving. The workshops enhance learning and retention by involving participants in practical applications of concepts, making them ideal for developing practical skills, creative thinking, and teamwork.

For over 45 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
