Saj Joy, MD, MBA, MS, CPE, FAAPL, is Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health Charleston Division. He was most recently Chief Physician Executive and System CMO at Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, one of the largest non-profit health systems in the mid-South. At MUSC, he leads 13,000 teammates serving patients at all hospitals and associated facilities in the Charleston Tri-County area (currently University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, and the Institute of Psychiatry) and MUSC Health - Orangeburg. He also sits on the Health System's Executive Council (Team SC) and provides guidance and advice on health care system strategies.
At MUSC, he holds the academic role as Clinical Professor. He has held academic roles at Wake Forest University SOM (Assistant Professor) with research focused on the impact of Obesity in Pregnancy, Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion SOM as Division Chief MFM (Associate Professor) and Atrium Health (AKA Carolinas Healthcare System) as Division Chief MFM and UNC-CH SOM (Clinical Associate Professor). Publications include 28 peer-reviewed manuscripts, online and book chapters and numerous research & educational presentations.
After completing an MBA from Duke University, he held several administrative leadership roles at Atrium including Medical Group Director, Surge capacity forecasting & management during COVID, CMO AH Pineville, CMO AH Central Division and Facility Executive (President) at AH Mercy.
At Baptist Memorial Health Care, he served as SVP, System CMO and Chief Physician Executive. He led improvements in Quality, Safety, Patient Experience, Provider Engagement and Operational Efficiency at Baptist’s enterprise of 24 hospitals and over 200 ambulatory practices. In addition to leading medical staff functions and oversight of regulatory compliance, infection prevention, operational quality and quality analytics, he led the employed Medical Group (>700 physicians and >300 APPs) operations and financial success, as well as the growing the clinical research and graduate medical education programs.
His Board service includes positions with the American Association of Physician Leadership, Duke University School of Nursing, Jackson + Coker, and Church Health to list a few.
