American Association for Physician Leadership members share their career news, accolades and other milestones.

ROY SCHUTZENGEL, MD, MBA, medical director for Adventist Health Physician Services, has been invited to join the Medical Administrators Conference, a national group of elite physician leaders with a full-time focus on innovative physician leadership — to discuss and influence current health care trends. An AAPL member since 2014, Schutzengel is one of three new member inductees. MAC membership is by invitation only, limited to 50 active members. “It was a great honor to be invited to this elite group of medical professionals who are at the top echelon of the health care field,” Schutzengel says. “I look forward to contributing to the influential work MAC is doing for the health care industry, physicians and patients.”

As a successful pioneer of health care transformation through leading-edge technology, Schutzengel plans to serve in a technology leadership position. Between 2012 and 2015, he spearheaded the Cerner electronic health record implementation for approximately 1,000 primary care and specialty ambulatory providers in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. Currently, he provides leadership and support at Adventist Health clinics in more than 80 communities in California, Oregon and Hawaii. He is also president of Physicians Network Medical Group, a multispecialty group of more than 300 medical professionals that contracts with Adventist Health to provide outpatient care.

The MAC group includes physician leaders from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, American Public Health Association and the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, among other organizations.

BRUCE OVBIAGELE, MD, MBA, MS, CPE, FAAPL, has been appointed by the University of California at San Francisco as the new associate dean and chief of staff of the San Francisco VA Healthcare System. An AAPL member since 2009, Ovbiagele will serve as the liaison between the university and VA system to ensure the quality of SFVAHCS as a site for teaching medical students and residents while supporting clinical and basic research by UCSF faculty. Formerly a professor and chairman at the Medical University of South Carolina’s neurology department, Ovbiagele is a clinical epidemiologist and global health scholar with a focus on reducing the burden of stroke in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. SFVAHCS has national centers of excellence in epilepsy treatment, cardiac surgery, post-traumatic stress disorder, HIV and renal dialysis, and is one of only five VA centers of excellence in primary care education.

VICTOR L. ROBERTS, MD, MBA, FACP, FACE, CPE, was named 2018’s top endocrinologist by the International Association of Top Professionals for outstanding leadership, professional and academic accomplishments, longevity in the field, community contributions, affiliations, and dedication and commitment to health care. An endocrinologist with Endocrine Associates of Florida in Lake Mary, Roberts has been a member of AAPL since 2003. As an expert in diabetes, metabolic and thyroid disorders, metabolic bone disease, pituitary disease and lipid disorders, Roberts serves in various professor capacities at the University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Central Florida.
