The second day of the 2024 Fall Institute, hosted by the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL), continued to build on the momentum of Day 1 with a dynamic blend of networking opportunities, educational sessions, and wellness activities. Today was one for the AAPL history books with the inaugural meeting of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Academy Cohort.

Advance Your Leadership Career: Leveraging Physician Executive Recruiters

The day began with an engaging session led by AAPL’s Executive Partner, Jackson Physician Search, which focused on leveraging executive recruiters to advance from clinical director roles to the C-suite. Jackson Physician Search provided invaluable insights on leadership development, transforming clinical CVs into executive resumes, honing interview skills, and becoming strategic business partners in the evolving healthcare landscape.

Educational Courses: The day was packed with a variety of in-depth courses designed to enhance key leadership skills:

  • Change Management and Adaptability: Attendees deepened their understanding of initiating and sustaining change in complex healthcare environments by leveraging advanced techniques.

  • Financial Acumen and Strategic Budgeting: Instructors outlined common budgeting pitfalls in financial management and shared strategies to improve forecasting accuracy.

  • Leadership and Team Dynamics: Attendees built on skills gained in previous sessions to identify leadership styles and maximize team productivity.

  • Value-Based and Population Health Management: Instructors defined the population health paradigm and identified strategies to use for developing value-based healthcare systems.

CMO Academy: Today select physician leaders embarked on a 12-month journey to improve their understanding of the current healthcare landscape, positioning themselves and their organizations for continued success.

The Academy curriculum, designed by CMO subject matter experts, focuses on fundamental leadership requirements like Self-Awareness, Leading Teams, and Leading the Organization. Cohort members will complete a series of live, virtual, and self-paced learning activities, culminating in a capstone.

This program is ideal for physician leaders in management positions who are preparing for a CMO role or CMOs who have served in the position for five years or less. Enrollment for the 2025 CMO Academy is now open. To learn more and apply for the 2025 cohort visit: https://www.physicianleaders.org/cmo-academy.

Lively conversations ensued as attendees met with AAPL authors to learn about their books, insights, and careers.

Available at Bookmart this week is a new release, Private Equity and Healthcare: Leadership, Economics, and Trends for the Future by Max Reiboldt, CPA, and other esteemed contributors. Other new publications available for purchase at this year’s Fall Institute included:

AAPL Golf Outing: In the afternoon, attendees hit the greens for a golf outing. As teams of four, they played 9-holes at the beautiful Kierland Golf Club, a perfect setting for networking and friendly competition.

Conclusion: The day concluded outside on the sky terrace where attendees mingled and shared insights on their courses. This offered a perfect backdrop to unwind and foster new relationships with peers dedicated to excellent physician leadership.
